What Certifications Should a Good Valve Manufacturer Have?

In industrial fluid systems, valves are critical control and safety components. Their performance directly affects operational integrity, environmental compliance, and personnel safety. Selecting a qualified valve manufacturer requires verification of internationally recognized certifications that validate design, materials, testing, and manufacturing capabilities. The following are key certifications a credible supplier should hold.

1. ISO 9001: Quality Management System

ISO 9001 certification confirms the manufacturer operates a documented quality management system covering design, procurement, production, inspection, and traceability. For precision components like valves-where dimensional tolerances, material chemistry, and sealing performance are critical-this standard ensures consistent product quality and process control.

2. API Standards (for Oil, Gas, and Petrochemical Service)

The American Petroleum Institute (API) publishes widely adopted specifications for valves in demanding energy applications. Key certifications include:

API 600: Specifies requirements for steel gate valves with bolted bonnets, commonly used in refineries and pipeline systems.

API 6D: Applies to pipeline ball, plug, and check valves, including requirements for fire-safe design, endurance testing, and pressure-containing components.

API 598: Defines mandatory shell strength and seat leakage tests prior to shipment.

API 607 and API 6FA: Fire test standards for quarter-turn and check valves.

API 607: Covers soft-seated valves up to DN600;

API 6FA: Applies to larger or higher-pressure valves. Both verify sealing integrity during and after exposure to hydrocarbon fires.

NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156: Specifies material requirements for service in H₂S-containing environments. Compliance ensures resistance to sulfide stress cracking (SSC), making valves suitable for upstream oil & gas, gas processing, and sour water service.

Holding these API monograms demonstrates engineering competence and compliance readiness for high-hazard applications.

3. CE Marking under the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED 2014/68/EU)

Valves placed on the European market must comply with the PED, which classifies equipment based on fluid group, maximum allowable pressure (PS), and nominal size (DN). Category II–IV equipment typically requires assessment by a Notified Body. A valid CE declaration with technical documentation confirms conformity with EU safety, health, and environmental requirements.

4. China Special Equipment Manufacturing License (TS Certification)

In China, valves intended for use in boilers, pressure vessels, or pressure piping systems require a Manufacturing License for Special Equipment issued by SAMR. The license evaluates the manufacturer's design controls, welding procedure qualifications, non-destructive testing (NDT) capabilities, and quality assurance system. It is a legal prerequisite for domestic pressure equipment projects.

5. Additional Application-Specific Certifications

Depending on service conditions, reputable manufacturers may also hold:

SIL Certification (IEC 61508 / IEC 61511): Required for emergency shutdown (ESD) valves in safety instrumented functions, typically at SIL 2 or SIL 3.

ISO 15848-1: Verifies low fugitive emissions from stem seals under thermal cycling, supporting compliance with EPA or EU VOC regulations.

3-A Sanitary Standard: Specifies surface finish (Ra ≤ 0.8 µm), cleanability, and material compatibility for food, dairy, and pharmaceutical applications.

Marine Class Approvals (e.g., DNV, ABS, LR, CCS): Include additional testing for vibration, corrosion resistance, and reliability in marine and offshore environments.

Conclusion

When selecting a valve supplier, verify that their certifications are valid, applicable to your service conditions, and issued by accredited bodies, because real reliability starts with genuine compliance.
